Exam stress and perfectionism
Support for Exam Stress and Perfectionism in Bourton-on-the-Water
When doing well never feels like enough.
Exams can be stressful for any young person, but for some the pressure goes beyond normal nerves.
SATs, GCSEs, A Levels and the move to college or university can bring constant worry, harsh self-criticism and a feeling that nothing is ever good enough. I offer 1:1 counselling in Bourton-on-the-Water, the Cotswolds and online for children aged 7+, teenagers and sixth form students who are struggling with exam stress, perfectionism or school pressure.
What it can look like
- Putting off revision, or working for hours without ever feeling satisfied
- Tears, meltdowns or shutting down around tests, mocks or results
- Fear of failure, or of letting others down
- Trouble sleeping, headaches, stomach aches or feeling constantly on edge
- Avoiding school or lessons around exam time (see school avoidance support)
- Feeling "not good enough", even when doing well
How counselling can help
Young people get a confidential space of their own to talk about the pressure they feel, without having to perform or get it right. Sessions might involve talking, drawing or other creative activities.
Together we can explore where high standards come from, ease the harsh inner critic, find ways to rest, and put into words what they need from the adults around them. I offer support, not guarantees, and can't promise particular results or grades.
Why my background matters
Having worked in education for over a decade, including as a primary school teacher and school mental health lead, I understand exam pressure from the inside, and what schools and families are balancing at this time of year.
A neuro-affirming space
I warmly welcome Autistic, ADHD and AuDHD young people, whether diagnosed, self-identified or exploring. Sessions are sensory-friendly and flexible, and don't depend on sitting still and talking.
Practical details
Sessions are 50 minutes, at £50 per session, in person in Bourton-on-the-Water for ages 7+, and online for ages 16+. For children under 16, I ask for the consent of a parent or carer. A small number of reduced-fee places are available.
I'm not able to offer tutoring, study coaching, diagnosis or assessment.
